Midwest Flowers to Watch, Pick & Love
There’s something magical about May. The chill of early spring gives way to warm breezes, the birdsong gets a little louder, and the world is blooming. Here in the Midwest—and especially at Honey Bee Gardens Farm—we’re beginning to see some of our favorite flowers awaken from their winter slumber.
Whether planting your backyard oasis, visiting a local farm, or appreciating nature's show, May is the perfect time to stop and smell the flowers. Let’s look at what’s blooming right now, what you can do with them, and how to bring that beauty into your home and heart.

🌸 What's Blooming in May?
Here are some of the stars of the season in growing zone 6:
Tulips
These show-stoppers are one of the first signs that spring is in full swing. Their bright colors light up garden beds and are perfect for cut arrangements.
Lilacs
The fragrance alone is enough to melt your stress away. These bloom briefly in May, so savor them while they last!
Peonies (early varieties)
These soft, romantic flowers begin making their grand entrance this month and are beloved for weddings and bouquets.
Iris
Bold and elegant, irises bring drama to any garden. Their unique shape makes them a favorite for floral art.
Daffodils & Narcissus
Depending on the weather, some may still be blooming. These cheerful yellow blooms are a springtime classic.
Bleeding Hearts
A woodland favorite with delicate, heart-shaped blooms that dangle like earrings from their arched stems.

💐 You-Pick Bouquets: A Midwest Tradition in Bloom
Here at Honey Bee Gardens Farm, everyone should experience the joy of picking their own bouquet. It’s not just about flowers—it’s about slowing down, being present, and connecting to the rhythms of nature.
Starting in July, we’ll host our You-Pick Flower Evenings every Thursday night from 5–7 PM. But even now, we’re walking the rows and watching those first buds peek out—getting ready for a summer full of blooms.

🌻 Flowers with a Purpose
Beyond beauty, flowers support biodiversity, pollinators, and mental health. Walking among flowers—or just bringing a few into your kitchen—can reduce stress, lift your mood, and connect you with something more profound.
Here are some ways to enjoy May flowers:
Create a gratitude bouquet—each flower represents something you’re thankful for.
Use petals to make homemade bath salts or scrubs
Press them into keepsakes with your kids
Add edible flowers like violas or nasturtiums to your salad
